On 13 June 2026, an environmental incident occurred at Priyablue Ship Green Recycling Private Limited’s Alang facility involving a vessel under recycling. During a spring high tide, exceptionally strong tidal currents caused the vessel to experience excessive surge and yaw movement. This led the forward starboard section of the vessel to come into contact with a nearby barge crane structure, resulting in localized damage to a fuel oil tank and the release of hydrocarbons into the surrounding intertidal area.
The incident was identified immediately by the on-site team. Priyablue activated its Emergency Response Plan and Oil Spill Contingency Plan without delay. Nearby operations were suspended, trained personnel wearing full PPE were mobilized, containment booms and absorbent pads were deployed, and pontoons were positioned beneath the damaged section to collect the escaped hydrocarbons close to the source. Recovery pumps were installed, fuel-transfer operations were initiated, and contaminated waste, sand and sludge were collected for treatment and disposal through authorized channels.
Importantly, the incident resulted in no injuries, no fatalities, no fire and no explosion. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board, Gujarat Maritime Board and other relevant authorities were informed, and an independent third-party marine surveyor was engaged to assess the vessel damage. The report notes that approximately 63 tonnes of fuel oil were affected, of which about 32 tonnes were directly recovered through containment and transfer operations. Remaining contamination was addressed through dispersant application, shoreline cleanup and continued monitoring.
The investigation identified the root cause as extreme lateral vessel movement generated by a rare monsoon spring-tide event, where tidal-current forces exceeded the restraint arrangements in place. While the immediate trigger was a natural tidal event, the investigation focused on strengthening operational controls to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
For Priyablue, this incident is being treated as a responsibility to improve further. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to safe ship recycling, transparent communication, environmental accountability and continuous improvement in line with statutory and regulatory requirements.
